As a seasoned chef and entrepreneur Chef Velvet has a portfolio of extraordinary culinary experiences.
At the age of nine Chef Velvet developed an appreciation for cooking and nutrition. Her past experiences, as the former head Chef at the Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland and with the Bitter Sweet Caters in Virginia and the family’s Sweet & Natural Vegan Café, gave her an extraordinary skill set to provide her the platform to create her own business.
As a result of the food disparities in the metro DC Area, Velvet was inspired to start her non-profit program to teach underserved communities across the nation the importance of community gardens, self-sustainability and life benefits of a healthy diet. In January of 2013 Velvet became Founder of “Vegan in the Hood” under the umbrella of a “Beautiful U, Yes U!”
Velvet shares her skills in the community by offering free cooking classes, teaching affordable vegan meal options, building community gardens and sharing the truths of vegan food to youth and their families.
Chef Velvet has build relationships with other organizations such as A Well-Fed World; DCHA; DCPNI; The Green SCHEME; DCPR; and Positive American Youth - Atlanta, GA . Her distinct vegan soul food style
has been well received. Services provided include weekly meal planning, special occasion catering, entertainment, and corporate events. For the past four years Velvet has worked as the personal chef to Artist and Singer Erykah Badu. In addition, Chef Velvet is honored to have shared her culinary passion and creativity with Dick Gregory, Jewel Tankard, Common, and Lamman Rucker, to name a few.
